Except distal dust transported by northwesterly winter winds from the inland gobi and sand deserts, the coastal loess also contains proximal, local coarse particles, which were derived from the exposed shelf as well as neighboring hills. OSL dating has shown a high potential to constrain the young sedimentation history in small drainage basin. Overall, the chronology for the Chaudanne site appears to be very robust.

However, the polymineral fine grains (4–11 μm) have a distinct SGC from the coarse-grain fractions. It may be caused by the difference in alpha irradiation. In the present study, we present field evidence as well as analytical data for a number of representative soil-sediment-profiles located in a variety of geological, geomorphological and climatic settings in central and western Crete . We have grouped the profiles in three schematic geomorphological categories in order to provide a geomorphological instead of a pedological context for their interpretation and comparison. Furthermore, characteristic and ubiquitous peaks in grain size distribution within the clay and silt grain size fractions could be identified and are most likely related to long-range dust inputs.

In this framework, this study focuses on the coastal zone of Psatha, Alkyonides bay, Greece, a tectonically active area, in order to discuss its evolution and RSL changes. For this purpose, corings were accomplished on the marshy area in the landward part of Psatha coast and beachrocks were mapped and dated with OSL. The sediments are mostly sands but contain some pebbles (3-4 layers) or silt. Clay is rare and does not exceed 5%, the higher values being related to higher silt content. The sediments are generally stratified and are moderately sorted according to the Trask index. The studied sediments are interpreted mostly as alluvial deposits but some hillslope deposits are apparently also present .

The great advantage of the method, i.e. dating the depositional age of sediments directly, can be impaired by incomplete bleaching of grains. This can result in a scattered distribution of equivalent doses , leading to incorrect estimation of the depositional age.
